From a Métis perspective, this debate is interesting because it was Sir John A. Macdonald’s opinion that Louis Riel came to Canada not out of altruism but to take money from the public purse. The right-wing scholar Thomas Flanagan used this debate between Macdonald and former Liberal leader Edward Blake to discredit Louis Riel and to dismiss the Métis resistance. Of note on this page are advertisements that delineate late nineteenth-century tastes.
