Creator: Grip P. & P. Co.
Subject: Illustrated War News, 1885 Resistance, Métis, Inspector Steele, Big Bear
Description: This is the title page to The Canadian Pictorial & Illustrated War News, July 11, 1885 (Vol. I, No. 15). This image is a washed-out green and vertical format. This illustration is a very fanciful account of one of the last encounters of the 1885 Resistance. (Big Bear surrendered to General Strange on July 2, 1885.) Inspector Sam Steele and a few other members of the North-West Mounted Police encounter Big Bear’s warriors. In the illustration, the mounted police stand their ground while being attacked by First Nations warriors – who are stereotypically portrayed as fierce on the one hand, but who are also shown to give up quickly when faced by a determined foe.
