Hudson's Bay Beaded Silver Cross Necklace (02) |
HBC, Fur Trade, Silver, Cross, Beads, Glass, Kinzie, Chicago, Quebec |
This item is a close-up of a silver fur trade beaded necklace distributed by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The silver part of the necklace (a cross) was made in Montreal and the beads are HBC trade beads. These items were given to Aboriginal chiefs and other dignitaries as a way of ensuring loyalty to the Company. This particular necklace belonged to the fur trader Quebec John Kinzie (1763-1828), a Euro-American founder of Chicago.
