He served as a private, corporal and sergeant in The Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served in the United Kingdom, the Mediterranean, Sicily, Italy and Europe; Joseph was also awared the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal (1939-45), and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp.
