| Description: | This page contains two images. The first two images have the caption “Ups and Downs’ below them. In addition, they contain the caption from The Toronto Globe (the forerunner of The Globe and Mail): “ No description could give an idea of the terrible roads through the woods. There were pitch holes six feet deep, into which horses and sleighs would plunge unexpectedly, and throw the whole load on the tail-board or the haunches of the horses”. The second image, “ A Welcome Call: ‘Hot Potatoes’”, is of a bugler playing in front of soldiers. The third image, “Scene on the Cars En Route to the Front”, shows soldiers sleeping in a railway car. The final image, “Presentation of Flag to the Toronto Volunteers at Carelton Place, By Mrs. Edward Blake”, is the most politically-charged image on this panel. Edward Blake was the federal Liberal leader during the 1885 Resistance – a few years prior to Wilfrid Laurier assuming power. When he was premier of Ontario in the 1871, he put a bounty on Louis Riel for the execution of Thomas Scott during the Red River Resistance. |
