If you have younger grades, you could use just the short version of chapter 2 (Introduction, short version) OR, if you have older grades, the whole of chapter 2 OR both the Opening (Chapter 1) and Introduction (Chapter 2).

The Opening film clip has a beautiful song written and sung by Cheryl L’Hirondelle and Joseph Naytowhow – and it is special to know that Joseph is Jim Settee’s grandson.

2. Title: Love Learning (Storytelling Clip 2)

This storytelling clip introduces something very special about Jim and his love of learning.  And it invites you to guess something very unusual about Jim Settee.

3. Fire Tower (Storytelling Clip 3; then Chapter 9)

A very special aspect of Jim was that he was a beloved Mushom, or Grandpa, and a role model for his grandchildren.  This Fire Tower storytelling clip sets up a very unique story about Jim as a Mushom.

4. Teeny Tiny Teaching (Storytelling clip 4; then Chapter 10)

This storytelling clip shares about something very small, that is a very big teaching from Jim.

Watch for the teeny tiny teaching – which is really very big!

Reflection: What is the teaching of this story?  You could write your answer or draw the teaching in your own way.

*Dear Educators, you can check the High School series to see if there any of the other stories are applicable for your grades, other than the ones highlighted on this page, especially if you have older elementary students. The high school series is organised using time codes with the full video, so that more than one chapter can be screened at one time, without interrupting the flow by stopping after each chapter.  You could add more clips from the High School Series here, or, carry on with the Tracker clip.

5. Tracker (Storytelling clip 5; then the first two minutes of Chapter 3; then Chapters 17, 18, 19)

In this storytelling clip Jeanne tells the central story of Jim Settee, as a renowned tracker.

The Lost Boy (play the first 2 minutes of Film chapter 3).

This chapter shares the story of the Lost Boy the way Jeanne’s dad would tell it.  Then, Jim himself shares about what happened; then another warden, Luther Ferguson, shares how this story moved him.

Finding the Lost Boy

Together, chapters 17, 18, and 19 share some ideas about what helped Jim to find people who were lost.

You can watch them separately (below) or you can watch them together using the whole film, at time code 39:00 – 41:14.

Chapter 17 (Love)

Chapter 18 (Finding the Lost Boy)

Chapter 19 (Unique)

What do you hear that helped Jim, as a tracker? How does this apply to your own life?

After you share, click here for reflections from other students.

6. Jim's Teachings

In this clip, Jeanne will bring Jim’s teachings together in a special way.

How would you describe or draw Jim’s teachings? His teachings can help you understand your own teachings, too. You can make your very own matchbox full of drawings or small objects that remind you of your special teachings. If you wish, you can share it with your friends. What would you put inside your matchbox?

The suggested activities in the Elementary Resources folder will share some ways that you can explore his teachings in your own way – including making your own Jim Settee matchbox.
